5 Top Tips to Getting a Cleaner Kitchen

The kitchen can be a messy place. I know that when I’m cooking there is usually about 12 pots involved for a meal to feed two people. We’re all getting a little more aware of the cleanliness of our homes and getting that wrong in the kitchen can result in some food poisoning, to say the least.

If you have little ones around you’ll have to think about your kitchen flooring, where they can crawl around and stick anything they find in their mouth. And then there’s the matter of where you prepare your food. For some tips on how to keep your kitchen cleaner, read our guide.

Cleaning your countertops

Your countertops are the place where you prepare your food, so it’s important that they’re kept clean. You can make this easier on yourself by making the counters a clutter-free zone. Take tips from the minimalists and only display the bare minimum. You’ll have more room to work, and you won’t have to lift everything every time you go to clean before you cook.

Also, remember to clean as you go, since dried on gunk from spills can be more difficult to get off. It’ll save you effort in the long run and if you forget about it and decide you want a snack, you be annoyed that you’re met with the problem later.

Cleaning your floor

As mentioned above, the floor is an important element of the cleanliness routine in the kitchen, especially if you have kids or grandkids. Muddy shoes are coming and going, sometimes even left by the door, pets are shedding, dust is settling and on top of that, your grandma’s Bolognese recipe is dripping, or vegetable shavings are landing.

If you have kitchen laminate flooring, it is easy to maintain, and it is a type of flooring which is doesn’t expand and shrink as much as other options, which has its benefits in a kitchen setting. You should hoover your floor with a hoover that has a brush, catching every gooey and dusty thing that lands in the kitchen, and if you need something more, like to handle a drop of jam, a well-drained mop will do the trick. Laminate flooring doesn’t like water, but if you drain the mop well, or go for a waterproof version, you can avoid any damage.

Cleaning your dishes

And then there’s serving your food. Your dishes are a nuisance that need to be washed routinely, but, well, do you want to eat with last night’s dinner encrusted on your plate?

Save yourself some effort and scrape off food residue with a spatula before you start washing dishes. You can do it when you’re finished eating so that you don’t need to worry about it down the line.

If you have a dishwasher, get into the habit of putting your dishes directly into the dishwasher when you’re done with them. It will save you the time of loading the dishwasher and leave your counters clear enough to keep clean and tidy.
