France Imposed a curfew order Paris and the top eight cities on Saturday.
“We have to act. We need to put a brake on the spread of the virus, “said President Emmanuel Macron, in a televised address.
“We will have to deal with this virus at least until the summer of 2021,” Macron said, adding that “all scientists” agree.
Other major French cities such as Lyon, the Mediterranean port of Marseille and southwestern Toulouse will similarly impose curfew orders, affecting about 20 million people out of a total population of about 67 million.
Macron said new daily corona virus cases should be reduced to “3,000 or 5,000” from current levels, which have reached nearly 27,000.
“We won’t be leaving the restaurant after 9pm,” Macron said. “We don’t party with friends because we know the risk of pollution is huge.”
Just minutes before Macron’s announcement, his government said the health emergency would last, giving authorities more powers to impose new measures to prevent the spread of the epidemic.
He asked people to limit meetings in their homes to six and to wear safety masks on such occasions.
Macron said anyone found outside the curfew without special authorization would be fined 135 euros (9,159) and the perpetrators fined more than 10 times.
Macron said 32% of France’s 5,000 intensive care units are currently occupied by corona virus patients, which should be reduced to “10 to 15%”.
